Department of paediatric and adolescent medicine - Medical University Innsbruck

The university hospital for paediatric and adolescent medicine is one of the biggest paediatric facilities in the country with a very long tradition; due to its geographic location it is the only tertiary treatment centre in West Austria including East and South Tyrol. To provide medical care in the region 96 paediatric and 24 paediatric surgical beds are available. Also paediatric surgical neighbouring disciplines are to be added to the above. The department is divided into three clinics. The range of subjects of Paediatrics I comprises paediatrics with the emphases on general paediatrics, paediatric intensive care medicine, paediatric haematology and oncology, paediatric neurology, congenital metabolic diseases, endocrinology and diabetology, rheumatology, infectiology, immunology, gastroenterology and hepatology. Paediatrics II manages neonatology. In Paediatrics III the emphases are on paediatric cardiology, pulmology and allergology. Research interests are, on the one hand, clinically applied research and, on the other hand, foundational research with a clinical orientation, especially in the area of molecular medicine and genetics. Clinical studies are carried out in co-operation with the Co-ordination Centre for Clinical Studies / OU Clinical Trial Centre. Theoretical studies are carried out in co-operation with human genetics and the Institute for Biomedical Research. Owing to the Medical University an adequate research structure in the clinics is in place. In the students' view the Department of Paediatric and adolescent Medicine ranks among the most favoured facilities when it comes down to lectures.
